An essential part of trading forex is opening an account with a good broker. You always have to have a way into the market and your brokerage company will provide software so that you can control your trades online. There are several things to take into account when choosing a forex broker. Here are some of the most important points to consider:

1. Reliability

Not all brokers are trustworthy, and finding one that is isn’t that simple. Because the forex markets spans the entire globe, there is no universal regulatory body, so some brokers are unregulated. Find out where a broker is located and what local associations they are members of. In the US brokers are regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) and/or the National Futures Association (NFA). Other countries have other associations.

Go to online forums and search for the name of a broker, to see if people have had problems with them. It is always best to find several different opinions, as just one person may have reasons to be biased. That person may have personal or financial reasons for praising or criticizing a broker.

2. Services provided

Because the forex markets operate 24 hours a day on weekdays, make sure the bokers service is available all through this time. You may also want to check if they have 24 hour customer support Monday through Friday.

Check that they cover all of the major currency pairs, that is USD against EUR, JPY, GBP, CHF, CAD, AUD. The should also allow some currency pairs that do not involve the USD, such as GBP/EUR.

All brokers will offer charts and technical analysis. Check that these meet your needs. You should also make sure that they execute orders immediately, and that you will get the price displayed at the time.

3. Charges

Forex trading brokers generally do not charge a fee or commission. Instead they make money from the spread, which is the difference between the bid and ask prices of a currency pair. Spread is usually in the range of 1-3 pips, depending on the broker and the currency pair, but it can vary at times of volatility. The size of the spread can make a big difference to whether you make profits in the long term.

The Communist Party has launched several campaigns against corruption. The primary problem seems to be, however, that officials expected to implement party reforms have lost much of their earlier revolutionary zeal. They now refuse to accept an ideology of frugality that requires them to struggle to feed their families on meagre wages ‘while people around them get rich’.

In Vietnam, and in the context of a socialist regime, abuse by bureaucrats and party officials has been far more blatant than in Japan. And, unlike the ‘iron triangle’ of Japan, it is difficult to argue that the form of cronyism that has developed in Vietnam has assisted the economy to grow. It has been more a situation of ‘rent seekers’ and communist party contacts draining State resources – in a similar fashion to the ‘princelings’ in China – than creation of wealth.

Given similar political and economic weaknesses in the neighbouring economies that have suffered severe downturn from the current Asian financial crisis, that of primarily a similarly weak banking system, there is considerable risk that Vietnam will also suffer from the economic fallout of the region. First and foremost the root problem of improper banking practices due to lax supervision and inadequate regulations, apparent in Vietnam’s financial sector will, if exposed to free international capital mobility, expose the economy to the similar mechanisms which have resulted in the ‘Asian meltdown’.

Profits on the upturn as markets stabilise

BUILDING and heating supplies firm Wolseley highlighted an upturn in fortunes as it revealed it was on course to beat profit expectations.

The group, which trades as Build Center and Plumb Center, said most of its markets were continuing to stabilise.

Wolseley shares jumped 8% in a weak market as investors welcomed the firm’s prediction that it expected to exceed the current City forecast for profits of pounds 374m in the year to July 31.

It reported like-for-like revenues growth in the UK and Canada during the quarter to April 30 and said new residential and repair and maintenance markets were expected to continue to improve.

Chief executive Ian Meakins said: “Demand across the markets in which we operate remains mixed though most markets continue to stabilise.”

Overall, profits for the third quarter of the company’s financial year were more than double last year at pounds 101m. Profits in the UK, where the group owns the bathroom specialist Bathstore, were pounds 31m compared to pounds 13m for the same quarter a year ago.

Total UK revenues declined by 5% to pounds 625m in the quarter, but the figure was 4% higher on a like-for-like basis as the company built on the progress seen since the summer of last year.

This has been driven by the plumbing and heating businesses, as trends in the building materials sector have yet to show a return to growth.

Wolseley recently identified its UK Build Center chain as one of 19 businesses earmarked for potential sale. As part of the review by Mr Meakins, who joined the company last year, Wolseley will seek to improve the performance of the businesses before deciding whether to put them up for sale.

In the United States, revenues were down 10% to pounds 1.3bn, but the fall on a like-for-like basis was limited to 4%.

The company has kept a tight grip on its cost base, having cut 1,900 jobs in the first half of its financial year – including 745 in the UK – on top of the 10,000 shed the previous year. It employs 47,000 people in 25 countries
